While he existed he was a subjective metaphor in the imaginations of millions, a rallying cry, a threat to return. This made him as dangerous as ever. Before capture he lived in the mind. A Hero or Devil figure larger than life possessed with super powers. Every killing could be attributed to him. Every bomb blast. He had become an icon. Now he's a homeless bum with nothing. It's as if Jesus or Lenin had been shown to be total fakes. It is devastating to the Baath partisans. Pulling down the statue doesn't come close to pulling down the man. His capture is not "another plastic turkey" as the Left is now saying. His capture reveals a democratic truth: All Men are Created Equal, and every once in a while we get to see that when the mighty are felled.
