The entire state is on handouts from the government: and the government is us. Tens of billions in farm subsidies that benefit huge corn farms (and small), huge corporations (ADM, and Carghill mainly), and every part of their economy. Kerry was right when he said there are more Agriculture Employees than farmers, and a hell of a lot of them are in Iowa. Farming is a tough business. It's the only business where your inventory is left out in the open air for eight months of the year where it is vulnerable to every kind of disaster. It can't be protected and we do need cheap food (Again, see the essay). But the farm states are on welfare and they will not vote for anybody who won't give them more.
