The LA Times, believe it or not, has a very good piece on Ashley Smith, the heroine in the surrender-capture of Brian Gene Nichols, the Atlanta courthouse murderer Right here. I ventured an opinion that the time line was so strange that many suspected that they might have had a sexual relationship before surrender. This would appear to be erroneous, but her background is very interesting, a fall to the bottom and rise to the top story. I hope she makes a ton of money.

.....the world has come calling for this 26-year-old waitress, a woman who struggled with alcohol addiction and voluntarily gave up custody of her daughter because she couldn't provide her a stable home. .......

She was arrested on drunk driving charges in 2001 and again in 2002 because of a suspended license. In 2003, she was arrested on a charge of violating probation and again on a charge of battery — a charge that was later dropped — against Croft. That summer, she signed a court order transferring custody of her 4-year-old daughter to Kim Rogers, her aunt.
She has had a long, and redemptive, round trip. Wanna bet those left wing atheists in Hollywood will do the story right?
