We had a major riot at a newly opened high school yesterday. Thirty arrests and lots of injuries. No one will admit that race was involved, but what else do kids fight over these days, favorite movies? LOS ANGELES -- A heavy police presence was planned Friday at recently opened South Area High School No. 1 after two days of fighting that resulted in 34 arrests, authorities said.

Eighteen students were arrested Thursday after two groups of students faced off and yelled challenges at each other.

On Wednesday, 16 students were arrested and 10 hospitalized after school police pepper sprayed them following a brawl that began with a fight between two girls during the lunch break, Monica Carazo of the Los Angeles Unified School District said.
"What I saw mostly was students that -- from comments I'm getting -- want to riot until the end of the semester," Principal Vince Carbino said. He said some students consider fights as a way to have school end early.

"On (Thursday), we dismissed at our normal time and as students were leaving the school, I was at the stairs and what they were telling me was, 'Oh man, we had to stay till the end,'" Carbino said. Another of the school's problems is that students disobey teachers who tell them to go to class, Carbino told parents at a Thursday night meeting that had originally been called to discuss names for the school. Instead, the meeting became a forum on how to try to stop the violence.

School officials have denied that race is an issue at the school south of downtown, which opened this year. It was opened, in part, to deal with the overcrowding at Jefferson High School, where a series of fights occurred earlier this year<
