IT'S ABOUT THE STOCK PRICE, STUPID

TALE OF TWO ECONOMIC CLASSES:

Tale One: November 22, 2006 -- DEBUTANTE season is here, and the big question for parents willing to buy outrageously expensive gowns to launch their daughters into society has been: Paris or New York? Peter Beard and his wife, Nejma, will accompany their daughter, Zara, 17, to Paris today for the festivities surrounding the Bal Crillon des Debutantes at the Hotel Crillon on Saturday. Zara will wear a peach gown by Christian Dior. Other debs coming out at the ball include Angela Mellon, the daughter of James Mellon III, in a blue dress by Christian Lacroix; Zoe Bullock, the daughter of real estate czarina Janna Bullock, in a white ball gown by Russian designer Igor Chapurin; and Hannah Olivennes, the daughter of actress Kristin Scott Thomas, in a black dress by Chanel. Those who will debut in New York at the International Debutante Ball at the Waldorf-Astoria on Dec. 29 include presidential niece Ashley Bush, Robert Mosbacher's granddaughter, Jane; Donna de Varona's daughter, Joanna Pinto; Carlos Falchi's daughters, Ana and Juliette; Peter Quick's daughter, Regina; and Dennis Suskind's daughters, Audrey and Pamela.

Tale Two: Westlake Village (CA) and Chicago (IL) - Update - Intel chief executive officer Paul Otellini revealed last month that Intel is about o enter the most extensive "self re-evaluation" phase in 20 years. Now, first indications of the impact of this process begin to surface: According to industry sources, the company may lay off or "re-deploy" up to 16,000 employees. Intel is expected to announce details on 15 June.
