Rape prosecution on hold

District attorney wants more info about events at team's party

Santa Clara County prosecutors have requested further investigation in connection with the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl during a March party involving De Anza College baseball players, a Sheriff's Office spokesman said Wednesday.

Santa Clara County Sheriff's investigators presented the case to the district attorney's office almost three weeks ago, but on Tuesday they were asked to resume their work, according to Sheriff's Sgt. Ed Wise.

"They're just following up on a couple of things at the request of the district attorney,'' Wise said. "It's nothing out of the ordinary.''

At least part of the follow-up investigation involves DNA evidence. Wise admitted that detectives are awaiting lab results involving DNA.

The follow-up investigation should be completed by the "middle of next week,'' according to Wise.

The alleged rape took place in the early-morning hours of March 4 during a house party on south Buena Vista Avenue in unincorporated San Jose. Eight De Anza baseball players were suspended from the team following the party, but to date no charges have been filed in the case.
Want to bet that the accused rapists are white? No. But in this case it's being checked out completely.
