Turkey ain't always the bird
The demos against the sitting government in Turkey are very important. Turkey is on the edge of becoming an Islamic state and this isn't something new. But each time during the past 90 years that this seemed inevitable, the army stepped in and restored a secular democracy (sort of). Once again the ruling party has been sponsoring madrassas, mosques, and clerics in the government; in some cases making Islam a requirement for a job. The imams are demanding the wearing of head coverings for women, and many women agree claiming that making showing of hair mandatory is a sign of suppression of religion---would Christians demand that all women appear in their underwear?---is the standard rallying cry. The wearing of the Hijab, the Muslim head scarf for women, is a lightning rod and the Imams signal for the imposition of Shiria law. The wearing of head coverings by Muslim women is a sign of submission to Allah and is the single most important article of clothing for Muslim women. Many European countries are banning the Hijab in all public and government places including schools because of the symbolism of submission to Sharia Law in preference to secular law.
300,000 people are protesting Islamic government in the streets today and all indications are that they are backed by the army and if true, the current government will fall and a "modern" government will replace it. Should the Islamics win this and prevail (a very unlikely prospect) Turkey will be headed down a road to radical Islam domination of the Middle East. The way things are going, Islam will triumph, if not today then tomorrow.
Stay tuned. It's the Hijab, stupid.
