About Mr. Nobody, Bing Crosby----Nobody I know thought he was much because he never invested himself in any of his music. But we never heard the Crosby of 1931 through '39. The 1933 movie, Going Hollywood, a piece of shit in every way but the incredibly great singing of Crosby, was on TCM this week, and my God could he ever sing. These days we only hear the Crosby that sang after the nodules that gave him all those low notes vanished 1940. When they vanished (some say he was talked into having them removed) he was left with a very narrow range. I once read a poll of top jazz musicians who named him the best jazz singer and the most influential vocalist. I never could understand that jazz musician appreciation until I first heard his 1930s voice. I don't know if there are any old Crosby movies on deck at TCM but watch for them. I watched a CMT special while I switched to Going Broadway every time Crosby sang a song. Just breath taking. BTW most of the ink surrounding this movie has to do with Marion Davies, Crosby's co-star and the mistress of William Randolph Hearst, and her entourage complete with catered meals on the set. But that's another story.
