Reynolds has a long winded philosophical rant that only seems fresh. When the "enlightenment," which was the movement that stated "everything" could be rationally explained, that God had jack shit to do with anything, there was no such thing as a moral code handed down from Heaven, and other denials of spirituality was just about sure to take hold in Europe, there was considerable commentary from the "non enlightened" regarding the consequences of eliminating God. The synthesis of the opposition was that without God, the fear of Hell and damnation, together with the moral code embodied in religion, there would be nothing to hold the common person back from doing anything at all. Even murder would become situational.
Looks like the opposition was correct, a fat lot of good that does. Pardon me while I go down the street and fuck my sister.......What do you mean immoral? Who are you to judge me? Me and my sister like to fuck and even her husband fucks his own mother and everything is OK......
Without Hell and a rigid moral code we slip into the Abyss......Doubt it? Just look at Congress.
