NAFTA--OBAMA'S WATERLOO

Big big mistake. The Great Black Dope has been phoning Canadian Officials telling them not to worry because he doesn't mean what he's saying for U.S. consumption. But, consider this: if you were Canada and had this wild man threaten cut off trade between Canada and the U.S. what would you do? Cut off Canadian oil, the finest in the world, a crude so pure that you can take it straight from the well and put it in your car? Cut off shipments of lumber and force our housing prices to either go to the moon or drop to near zero? How about closing the auto plants in Ontario? Asking for a renegotiation of the Niagara Falls power agreement in which Canada guarantees a certain amount of water for the falls and generators?

And what do we sell to them? Well, we sell them cars but there are already problems with US cars meeting their safety standards--get my drift? We sell billions of dollars worth of goods to them, $6mln from neighboring Wisconsin alone. The Great Lakes states sell Canada more than $1bln worth of goods, not to mention services.

Yeah, we are really getting fucked with NAFTA. Just listen to the Great Black Dope, he'll tell you.

So how about them fucking Mexicans. What do we sell to them? First, it's important to realize that there is an imbalance favoring Mexico of $74mln in '07. The total trade isn't all that much but once again it's Mexican oil that keeps our industry going. Think they might cut it off and sell only to Latin America? The trade imbalance favors Mexico by several hundreds of million dollars each year. So, if we cut them off at the pass, what can they do about it? Mostly it could be massive retaliation by the rest of South America from whom we import everything from crude oil, sugar, cars, soy beans (major amount) and many chemicals. But the political damage could be severe, fueling unrest throughout Latin America by countries that will feel we have fucked them after making a deal with them.

Reports now are that Obama's people are phoning all over Canada telling the Canadians not to take him seriously, his anti NAFTA rhetoric is just for us American boobs. The Standard of Canada has stuff on this too.
