Forget all the blather about the actual data, the techniques for gathering it are the same that have been used for decades. The items reported contain most of those considered necessary for living. The changes are made about once per year. There is no longer cigarette consumption, ice for refrigeration needs, saddles, or typewriter prices. Instead we have calculators, computers, and certain computer programs in the data base. In spite of flaws, the reports are based on the same methodology that has been used for at least twenty years. We are comparing apples to apples using addition, subtraction, and interviews. Missing? Things like day care costs and tolls.
