Hey, the Federal Govt is nationalizing or taking on all the risk. Storm wreck your un-flood insured house built where it floods often? Fed it. Buy a house you had no hope of paying off? the Fed will guarantee your obligations under a refi to lower payments. Baby boomers will each use $200,000 worth of medical care during the last 6 months of their miserable lives? universal health care. Citicorp? Fed will guarantee to a buyer no losses.
The Federal government in its many forms and slivers can underwrite anything and everything.
That is only what we know about. This AM Lehman is running around trying to borrow money they say the don't really need because everything is OK. I keep thinking that this is a millipede with a thousand more shoes to drop.
This just in: Lehman was (is) leveraged 32 to 1 in all these debt instruments. Only a bunch of Ivy League pricks could ever produce an instrument that allowed that kind of leverage and only a bunch of Ivy geniuses would buy them. 32-1, can you believe it?

Hmmmm.
Actually I thought it was up to $453 billion loaned by the Fed to the banks.
