Correction: lots of emails pointing out that my statements regarding redwood trees were incorrect. Facts: the coastal kind take a hundred years to grow back. There are some trees that are up to 3,000 years old but there's not many. Redwoods require 100 plus inches of rain per year and aren't found in too many places; in California they are mostly in high fog areas. Most important is that they are resistant to fire; not that they cannot burn but it's almost impossible for the entire tree to burn because the bark is so tough. So the fire damage in our national parks will probably be confined to ferns and smaller trees.
