Democracy? Going going gone.
Gasoline prices too high? Hell, let's just do what we did to the banks. Take the gasoline companies..... Which means it's a whole new ball game. Pricing in a new Risk: Political hacks can now walk into any company and threaten them with seizure when a business pisses them off. There are various degrees and types of risk within the investment world, but government takeover has never been one of them. Til now. During the current meltdown the blabbermouths on TV were talking about "moral hazard" as an excuse to do nothing; we hear the term "systemic risk" (not systematic risk), which means risk inherent in a system; and then there are the plain ordinary risks present in day to day investing or speculation. Nobody has ever mentioned "Political Risk" because we thought the Constitution protected us from any kind of government bullying into our private affairs. Bye bye to that. The brand new risk is that any time a corrupt congress person wants "in" a business, that business can be be forced to do what they are told. Let's call it "Political Risk," one atop all the other risks. The one now hovering over every stock purchase or business start up as a result of the "cure" we have just taken. Government owns huge parts of companies and banks and in a rush we encouraged the most corrupt part of our culture to take over a business. Government ownership has never happened before. We thought it couldn't happen. Business free from government bullying is what has made our free markets "free." Now a corrupt and power happy Congress, bureaucrats with the power to sic the FBI on any corporation, or any government prick seeking publicity can take a "piece" of a business "just because." All of this will be backed up by a media, that can only be called fascist, that will cheer the capitulation of greedy capitalists and the eradication of the Constitutional bulwark against Big Government. Activities which most of us thought were unconstitutional are now just a whim away. This new power surely will lure shitheads like Schumer, Frank, Dodd, etc. into show trials of recalcitrant bankers or other execs unwilling to do the bidding of a near totally corrupt Congress. It's coming, especially if Obama is president. Just wait until they force the oil company executives to "talk" as media whores cheer from the cheap seats. I can see it now. The New York Times will call it enlightened democracy. Maxine Waters now owns every company in America.
Me? I'm looking toward the day when an Illinois congressman gets fed up and takes over the Chicago Cubs.......Just win baby, or else....
A funny, for once, SNL skit about the problem. Turn it off before Mill Maher does a stupid bit.
