While surfing thru You Tube searching out "Brother Can you Spare a Dime" for the Crosby version (regarded as the best), I ran across the Mario Lanza version of "Nussun Dorma" sung by the truly great tenor when he was just 27 years old. Compare the Lanza version with Pavoratti's and I think you'll agree that Lanza could sing like hell and had "the voice of the century." He had serious emotional problems and his career was poisoned.
