Has he tried looking on their website?

Tell him it has a warning against getting into any boat with Sean Penn.

WASHINGTON - The federal government plans to dole out debit cards worth $2,000 each to victims of Hurricane Katrina, The Associated Press has learned.

The unprecedented cash card program initially will benefit stranded people who have been moved to rescue centers such as the Houston Astrodome. The program was outlined by Homeland Security Department officials in a conference call with state leaders Wednesday morning, according to a governor and another state official who spoke on condition of anonymity because the program had not been publicly announced.

Bet it's an urban legend. Can't find anything from a known reputable source. $250,000,000 to people with no ID, no known address, and God only Knows what background would cause a stink worse than Blanco....

I think you're right, Howard.

I also stand by my prediction that Katrina clean-up will turn into a pork-barreling jobs program that will be stimulative but inflationary. They'll require the workers to do a lick or two of work -- maybe -- before giving 'em paychecks.

"... $250,000,000 to people with no ID, no known address, and God only Knows what background ... "

Doesn't that description fit los illegales from Mexico?

Blogger Mike Shedlock doesn't agree with me:

http://globaleconomicanalysis.blogspot.com/

...No doubt there are those that think this is inflationary. Rest assured it is not. One million people suddenly put out of work, with no income and destroyed houses is simply NOT inflationary. Rising gasoline prices without rising incomes is not inflationary either regardless of what anyone tells you. This is going to cut into consumer discretionary spending big time, and unlike 911 there is NOT going to be a big housing boom to bail us out. ....

What Mr. Shedlock doesn't forsee is the heap of checks the gooberment is going to start writing for reconstruction work and make-work. Inflationary, yes.
