Howard why would they screw up so badly on this? I can understand underestimating demand but on such a large scale? it's almost as if they did this on purpose. it isn't like they don't have the capital to build up an adequate inventory.
MSFT has a history of bringing product out too quickly that has bugs, failing to bring other product out when they said they would, and in some cases, like the MSIE 7, not at all. In this case, unlike the others, it's costing them dearly and in every respect you can imagine.
It's ill-advised to assume that MS has driven an entire market to Sony by failing to have adequate units of the 360 available at launch. Brand loyalty in the console gaming industry is as firm and resolute as, say, the auto industry USED to be. MS's primary goal was to beat Sony out of the gate with their new system, and THAT decision was based primarily on penetrating the Japanese console market where Sony is king. We'll see if the gamble was worth it when the 360 debuts in Japan in next week.
