Bombing or shelling civilians is always counterproductive......Ever since air power has been a big factor (starting with the London Blitz) each and every bombing has produced a population that rallies around the flag. Their backs stiffen and they will fight to the last man standing, if necessary. Our bombing of Nazi Germany destroyed some industry but produced a population willing to go underground and work building war materials just to show their determination and loyalty. We brutally firebombed Japan (more casualties in Tokyo raid than Heroshima) and the population was ready to die for the Emporer. The A Bomb would have failed were it not for the Emporer himself dictating a surrender. We bombed the shit out of civilians in VietNam and it did nothing. The Israel "action" against Hezbollah has resulted in an entire population rallying to Hezbollah, making it stronger and not weaker. The aura of Israel invincibility has been shattered and proof has been offered once again of the real result of attacks on the civilian population. The long term damage to Israel may be fatal.

In every case, the muslim population (the muslim ummah in every in the world for that matter, including here in America) supports the fighters (Hezbollah, Al Qaeda, Iraqi terrorists, CAIR, etc...) who are the military/political wing of Islam. All muslims (moderate, radical, in Saudi Arabia and the US, England, Holland, etc..) seek the establishment of sharia law and the rule of Islam over the world. The only difference between muslims is how they get there, through war/terror or conversions and/or using the multi-culti idiots in Western govt's to achieve their aims. That is why there is never any criticism by "moderate" muslims of the terrorists and head hackers. There are no civilians in this war. All non-muslims are seen as infidel soldiers and we will be treated as such. Examples of this include the kidnap and torture of Nick Berg, the suicide bombings in Israeli Pizza Huts, the attacks on our troops in Iraq and the (under-reported) beheading of Buddhist monks in Thailand. Al-Qaeda even says as much in their PR material. If muslims see us all as infidel soldiers to be killed, then let's grant them the same courtesy and keep dropping bombs. These people will never stop and we will never have any kind of until they are killed. That is the reality of the situation.
Bombing civilians works just fine if the bombs are nuclear. Just ask Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
BTW: It's August, and for the first time in my life I've seen zero stories about either city.

The point is that it didn't work in Nagasaki etc., the Japanese did not want to give up, only the intervention of the Emporor made it happen and as it was he barely escaped assassination minutes before he announced the surrender over the air. I served in Japan and as anyone will tell you, those assholes still act like the entire war was our fault, they deny the Rape of Nanking ever happened, as well as thousands of cases of brutal torture.
I'm sure the citizens of Berlin and Dresden were pretty pissed. So too the good daughters of the Confederacy in Atlanta, Richmond, and Memphis. Means nothing after your ability to wage war is destroyed. Bang-bang.
Howard, I lived in Japan for 14 years (1981-96) and work as a Japanese>English translator now. I got real tired of the sanctimonious breast-beating every August. But it is not true that "they", i.e. that even most of them, deny the Rape of Nanking or the rest of their outrages. Plenty of Japanese know about those filthy parts of their history and deplore it.
I don't know your experiences with Japanese but I'd say the assholes are no greater or less a part of the population than they are here.
