2. A couple of years ago I purchased an HP computer. At that time their customer service was amazing, the best I'd ever experienced.

That was then, this is now. They have deteriorated just like Dell did a few years ago. They don't handle their own service any more, you cannot get any information out of them, not even a price for a specific part. Their current reputation is very good based on old performance. Be forewarned.
