Liberals love the VAT because it not only allows, but almost demands, that a series of secret "value added" taxes be imposed or not imposed based on political whim and bribes. Tax tobacco but not steel; tax Toyota but not Government Motors; tax certain types of computer programs but not others? Taxes imposed on every step of production from buying the seed to harvesting a crop An absolutely horrid idea for everyone.
